Most London central heating systems were never designed. They grew: a boiler in the 1970s, three radiators added in the 1980s when the loft was converted, a combi swapped in during the 2000s onto pipework sized for a gravity system, a towel rail teed off the nearest pipe by a bathroom fitter. The result heats the house eventually, unevenly, at a cost, and nobody can say why the back bedroom is always cold.
A designed system is different. The heat loss of every room is calculated from its size, construction, glazing and exposure. Each radiator is sized to that loss at a sensible flow temperature. The pipework is sized for the flow each radiator needs. The boiler is sized to the total, not to the biggest box in the range. The controls split the house into zones that make sense for how it is lived in. And then it is balanced, so every radiator gets its share.
